First Mates

Our Father’s Day tradition is renting a boat for the day. The lake is about two hours away and about halfway there I got a call from the captain I rent the boat from…”winds are pretty high, I’m only sending out my strongest captains today…you might not want to go out today”. Of course I was challenged by this, and despite the fact that I was putting in with a 7 and 9 year old, I said “no worries, I’ve sailed in heavier winds”.

It ended up being fine, and the three or four (or six or seven) times we were at close to full tilt and The Fellas had their feet dragging in the water with the sail horizontal above their head, they were laughing their asses off. The first time we went we spent the first 30 minutes on water safety and the “man overboard drill”. That became their favorite part, so we probably ended up spending 90% of our time this trip waiting for one of The Fellas to jump in the water screaming “man overboard” and then watching us come about for a rescue. Fun fun fun.
