For the past six or eight months I’ve heard about the massive online game that is one part Minecraft and one part Hunger Games. Within Ford’s class, it’s split about 50/50 of those-who-do and those-who-don’t.
I’ve read enough on kids and video games – everything from the important role they play for developing boys and their need for bursts of self-control to the potential downsides against resilience – that I think I can responsibly introduce the game. Ford is ready, it’s a pretty big element of kid social capital.
Overall, it’s a pretty awesome game.
My favorite part so far has been eavesdropping on the team conversation (a requirement of us playing Fortnite) and listening to the dynamics of 9/10 year olds trying to navigate team dynamics..
I need to come up with some compelling rules to govern play time, just to cut down on the constant “Daddy, what can we do to earn screen time?”
