Rule #17: We Don’t Walk by Trouble

We continue to build our Vockell Guide with rules that set our personal standards as humans, and to a certain degree, as gentleman. As much as possible I like to present additions to the Rule Book “in context” for greater impact and not just make them seem like some theoretical set of good behaviors [I know there is some better word I am looking for here, is it ‘social norms’ or…TBD]. The Fellas and I were rolling for a late-night swim-and-hot-tub when we walked by the Community Room and the alarm was going off. Heckle and Jeckle continued towards the pool and I pulled us up to introduce Rule #17: We Don’t Walk by Trouble.

  • We know from the alarm sounding that ‘something isn’t right’
  • We don’t always have to help, but we do have to know if our help is needed
  • We found the source of the alarm and somebody was on it, with nothing more to do
  • We hit the hot tub and did a quick “Good Samaritan” discussion
  • They’re still a little young to talk about Kitty Genovese

Tomorrow we’ll add it to the Rule Book with the usual format of:

  1. They add the rule
  2. They write an explanation in their own words
  3. The write an example of how they might employ the rule

Character is a habit.
