Extreme Ownership

Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy SEALs Lead and Win by Jocko Willink and Leif Babin.

Summary: captivating battle stories to illustrate some important core management skills ranging from accountability to humility to sharing the credit. If you haven’t read a book like this before, it’s a fun romp through some important leadership traits.

I think I’ve read “this book” four or five times, by which I mean these same themes presented in different contexts. Patton and Oliver North I think both wrote this same book, but the updated battle stories definitely make the read more exciting.  It didn’t touch on any real new management concepts, and it was missing what I was looking for which was approaches to evolving a group to an Extreme Ownership model.

I’m super old and have worked at decently sophisticated companies, so I have a handful of real world examples that illustrate the principles of this book. While nothing really new popped up on the pages, it was worth a reminder of some of the concepts and the examination it triggered across some of my current activities to make sure I was incorporating some of the ideals. This book is for new-to-management/leadership or new-to-sophisticated-leadership.
