We make a lot of group choices, from meal selection to park destination to Ninjago episode selection. Part of maintaining the general atmosphere of justice is the equal distribution of selection. A lot of team sentences begin with phrases like “last time we went to dinner after basketball The Elder picked the Village Inn, tonight it’s The Younger’s turn to pick.”
The wildcard in this is the power of influence that an older brother might have. A regular scene has The Younger picking a TV episode that The Elder considers ‘too young’ and The Elder begins a campaign of “don’t you think you’d rather…”. At these moments I try to jump in with “your vote is your vote” and encourage The Younger to stick with his choice. This plays out across a dozen different scenarios and the purpose is reinforce self-determination and asserting your opinion. Of all the potential rules, this probably will be the most visited.
